COVID19

A lockdown will be imposed in Lviv, where the mayor has skipped ahead of the Cabinet of Ministers and introduced a regular lockdown.

Kyiv is one of the Ukrainian hotspots for the corona virus. Hundreds of registered daily cases, pressure on the hospitals and deaths has forced the mayor of Lviv, Andriy Savoyi to impose a lockdown. He announced that on Facebook today, according to Unian.

“It is a hard but extremely necessary decision by the emergency situations commission. (…) The dynamics of hospitalization of critically ill patients do not go down. We must do everything necessary to prevent the collapse of the city’s healthcare system:”

“This is the time, during which we will be able to equip more beds in hospitals and clinics. It is also the only way to break the chain of the spread of the disease,” the mayor wrote on Facebook.

The new restrictions will be enforced for a period of 9 days from the 19th to the 28th of March, so this weekend and the following week. It is not clear, what will have to happen for the city of Lviv to prolong these measures.

Klichko calls for help

In the city of Kyiv, the mayor Vitaliy Klichko is waiting for the ministers to do something to curb the spread of the virus in the capital city. According to him, the city have only a matter of days, maybe a week, before going to the red risk level.

“We are considering various measures, we are proposing, but quarantine curbs shall be introduced exclusively by the government. As of February 17, 2021, the municipalities have no right to step up quarantine curbs on their territory, i.e. this is a decision to be taken by the central government. Therefore, we’ve appealed to the Cabinet of Ministers for stepping up these restrictions,” he told TV Channel Ukraina 24.

Klichko earlier asked the government to toughen the rules of the orange risk zone, where Kyiv finds it self these days, to help stop the spread of the virus. It is not yet fully clear, what the lockdown in Lviv or the call for help in Kyiv will translate to in reality.
